Vitamin D and the Spine: Could the “Sunshine Hormone” alter spinal disc disease and improve back pain? (#7)

Christian Girgis 1
  1. Westmead and Royal North Shore Hospital, Sydney, NSW, Australia

Beyond vitamin D’s established roles in bone and calcium homeostasis, this hormone exerts non-classical effects in muscle, nerves and possibly, the intervertebral disc.  This talk will give an overview of the vitamin D-endocrine system, putative effects of vitamin D and its receptor (VDR) on disc morphology, disc disease and the multifactorial components of back pain.
